By now you must have heard about the governments plans on 'road pricing'. They want to fit every car in Britain with a GPS tracking device, and charge us up to £1.34 per mile to drive at peak times (for comparison, petrol currently costs me £0.13/mile).
People do not sit in traffic jams for a laugh- if they are there they usually have to be. Also I believe that tracking everyone, everywhere, 24/7 is somewhat sinister. We pay through the nose for ALL forms of transport, remember that train and bus fares have been increasing well above the rate of inflation for years. How is anyone supposed to get to work or anywhere else?
What do you think about this?
If, like me, you strongly disagree with these plans there is an official, government-hosted petition against them here: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/

I do not agree with this road tariff malarkey. No way Hosay!!
As well as charging u money for using the roads, the GPS will calculate your average speed over the distance that u have travelled by road. In which case u can get caught speeding this way too. 3 points and a fine treat urself from Big Brother!!

just another marginalisation of the porr by this government. basically...if ya loaded then it doesn't matter...if ya not ur movements become restricted. maybe they should put the billions of pounds in war chests into good use. fook em...i'm driving at 2am hopefully it will 'cheaper' to travel then.
you could of course object and use a train....if youve got the money to travekl on one that is. the price is set to increase by up to 12.5 % next year.
it would actually be cheaper to buy a horse and ride everywhere...until they bring in horse tax......

I disagree with yet another scam to make the working class citizen poorer & the rich richer yet again.
Running a car is expensive enough let alone having to pay yet another revenue.
When's the government gonna get real about the situation in this country!!!!!!
Gwarn Martin, keep up the hard work

They'll be able to track your every move remember - so you'll get a knock at the door:
"Where do you think you were you going at 2AM then?"
"Oh yeah and you were doing 32MPH in a 30 limit"
Bad things

Cheaper at night?
The plans I've seen involve the GPS box actually being fitted by your insurance company, with it also calculating insurance charges per mile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAYD
When they were discussing this on Radio 1 last week, they said that for younger drivers (i.e us) insurance charges would go up to £1 per mile at night.
So:
During the day:
Road charges: >£1.34/mile
Insurance: £0.02/mile
At night:
Road charges: £0 - £0.20/mile
Insurance: >£1/mile
You can guarantee that busy roads = expensive road charges and cheap insurance, but quiet roads = expensive insurance and cheap road charges. Your'e buggered either way.
And what Overload says is absolutely correct.
If the GPS reveals that at 11pm, your car was in the vicinity of the house of a 'known dealer' or somewhere else you don't have a legitimate reason to be, you can expect a visit from the police. Never mind if you sped a little on your way there (or anywhere else).
BTW: The petition now has over 27,000 signatures!

this is fucked up - the government take the piss. Elitist wankers in an elitist oligarch society where we have no real democratic choice - just a very mild illusion of choice. This along with ID cards and the central 'NHS' computer all combine to be a seriously dark web of totalitarian devices of utter privacy destruction. The dark riders need to be brought down somehow.
Check these out as well as the road tax biz:
http://www.nhsconfidentiality.org/?page_id=23
http://www.no2id.net/
...And as if to add insult to injury, they want to start charging us extra to take our rubbish away, a service which we already pay for in our council tax.... doh!.... and for all their 'hard work' they need to give them selves a 66% payrise this year! !!!! What a bunch of wankers. Somehow I don't think they will feel any of these taxes on that kind of wage....which we all pay for whilst living hand to mouth! This ain't democracy.
