iPOD fans face being hauled into court and FINED if they are caught crossing the road while listening to their favourite tracks.

Britain could be set to follow New York, where safety-conscious senator Carl Kruger is tabling a bill to outlaw so-called “distracted walking”.

Offenders would be fined £50 — and be forced to appear in court in person to pay their penalty, rather than simply posting it.

Kruger’s new law would also prosecute anyone caught crossing the road while using mobile phones, video games or other hand-held accessories.

It aims to cut the number of accidents involving pedestrians, joggers and cyclists who step out in the road without paying attention to traffic.

Kruger said there had been three iPod related road deaths in New York since September. He said: “We have a major public safety crisis.

“If you are so involved in your electronic device that you cannot see or hear a car coming, this is indicative of a larger problem that requires some sort of enforcement beyond the application of common sense.”

Kruger said a 21-year-old man in his district was killed when he stepped off the kerb at a busy junction while listening to music on his iPod.
And a 23-year-old iPod listener was killed in New York last month. Kruger’s chief of staff Jason Koppel said: “You could have a fire engine coming and you wouldn’t hear it.”

In Britain, Roger Vincent of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “There have been a couple of cases where it has been suggested cyclists on iPods have been distracted by music and involved in fatal accidents.

“With iPods it is as if you are encased in sound. Try to make sure you can hear traffic and know what is going on.”

Labour MP Stephen Pound said it was a barmy plan. He said: “British people can walk, talk and look at the same time.”

Surprised

Three? Three! is that all! There have probably been more than three zip-up fly related deaths since september.. and definately more than three non-iPod related road deaths. Thats ridiculous. People know that they can't hear anything while using an iPod or similar so when crossing a busy road you should turn it down/off - those three people died from their own stupidity, not looking where they were going. IPods don't make you blind.

There is an excellent article here about Natural Selection -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_selection

Quote:
..traits that are heritable propagate throughout a reproductive population: individual organisms with favorable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce than those with unfavorable traits.

Favourable trait:
Looking before crossing a busy road = stay alive and produce offspring that most likely also inherit that trait.

Unfavourable trait:
Crossing the road in a world of your own and not looking = death = the End

You'll need a licence to carry a suitcase while crossing the road soon.

I think it's only gonna be £500 per annum
