KLP Records have something very special indeed for you for their kick off release. The jungle classic I Spy
(Eye Nuh See), first issued way back in 1994, has been remixed by the original artist, DJ Monk, as well as
Liondub, Papa Gee and DJ Vapour. The original is still
being played all around the world, and the remixes
all give the tune a little something different for 2014.
As both a DJ and producer, Monk is known for
classics like Good Body Girl and many more, and has
remixed the likes of Kenny Ken, Superhero House
Crew and others. But I Spy has always been his
most recognisable tune, and his own remix of the
track brings the heat inna 2014 style. The vocal line
interacts perfectly with the rumbling break, weaving
in and out of the mix. The bassline, just like on the
original, is what makes this one, and will have all of
the massive skanking inside the rave.
Liondub steps up next with his International refix.
Taking things back a step to highlight another side
of the track, Lion maximises the dub potential on his
version, before powering back in with a full-on track,
full of strength and authority. Don’t sleep on this one,
it’ll be waking up the neighbours before you know it. Those that remember the original will love the remixes,
but there’s more than enough on show for those new to I Spy. Papa Gee’s Riddim Remix flies in next, taking
the riddim apart and rebuilding it, with flashing electronics and a storming dub section. A perfect tribute to
the power behind so much jungle music.
Closing the package is Vapour’s killer d&b refix. Giving the track a contemporary edge, this is as upfront as
you would expect from Vapour. All about the bass, the 36hertz man evokes the past whilst giving a glimpse of
the future. You’ll be able to spy all the best elements in both jungle and drum & bass on show here.
